Donmix is well-known across the south Gippsland region in Victoria as a reliable and quality supplier of pre-mixed concrete. The company specialises in supplying decorative, special class or normal class pre-mixed concrete requirements.
Founded by William (Bill) Donohue in the late 1950s, the first major project for Donmix was supplying the concrete for the construction of the San Remo Bridge in 1963. This often-overlooked but vital bridge connects the Victorian mainland to the popular Phillip Island. Over 50 years later, the company has grown steadily, and continues to supply commercial, industrial and residential customers from Lang Lang in the west to Foster and Walkerville areas in the south east and Poowong & Leongatha in the north.
Donmix’ geographic footprint consists of five fixed concrete plants and one quarry in the Bass Coast Shire. Wonthaggi is Donmix’s main base of operation, with the head office, workshops and major concrete plant located on a large block of land with sublime access to the town and surrounds. Furthermore, Donmix are one of the largest private employers in the shire, employing around 50 people.
Mark Stevens, the General Manager at Donmix, was brought in after the Donohue brothers (sons of Bill) retired. Mark was previously Managing Director of an engineering business for Australasia and Asia Pacific. Prior to that, Mark worked for other major Australian public companies.
A boom period for Donmix came with the construction of the Wonthaggi Desalination Plant in 2012, where they supplied 600,000 tonnes of backfill material. However, according to Mark, after completion of the de-sal plant business fell away for a while but has come back again in 2017 “big time”. Much of this growth can be attributed to the residential sector. Residential growth has been the “bread and butter” of the business according to Mark. Donmix has also participated in major commercial developments including schools, shopping complexes and speciality projects like the Penguin Parade on Phillip Island and Candowie Dam.
Donmix’s “growing size and ageing fleet” required the purchase of a new type of truck, Mark stated. It was a “combination of many factors” that led to the purchase of Isuzu trucks, Mark advised. “Their reputation for reliability, cab comfort, and driveability were all important factors for me,” Mark went on to say.
Donmix received the new FYJ 8x4 when they were first released; the trucks have played a vital role in the growth and development of Donmix. The company is progressively upgrading its fleet over a four year period and are looking at replacing their single steers, twin steers and Minimix trucks with Isuzu trucks.
“I’m very happy with the Isuzu products so far,” Mark added; Isuzu’s in the current fleet now consists of 5 FYJ 8x4 auto agitators, with another two on order and 1 new FVY 6x4 .
Donmix has dealt with Patterson Cheney for about two years now and Mark praises the service and quality of the open relationship he has with Patterson Cheney: “They have a like minded approach to business and are responsive to my business requirements,” said Mark.
Donmix prides itself on servicing the whole market. Mark takes pride in his role with the company, assuring that Donmix’s quality is the best in the region. “People come back to us, because of our quality,” Mark summed up.
The essential mix between Donmix and their Isuzu fleet has laid the foundations for the company to continue to prosper in the future.
